UK Handmade is a design-led online magazine committed to showcasing and promoting the best creative talent the UK has to offer. The term 'handmade' is an indicator of quality, care and professionalism that is second to none and something that UK Handmade wishes to encourage and celebrate.
UK Handmade began its journey in 2008 when a group of designers and makers, led by web designer and artist Karen Jinks, decided to create a magazine that would reach to the general public and demonstrate that 'handmade' was no longer a relic of dusty church halls but a vibrant and viable alternative to the mass produced and imported goods that saturated the high street. With the combined skills and dedication of its team of volunteers, UK Handmade has grown from a small digital magazine and blog, to a large creative community of artists, designers, makers and event organisers, who are all driven by the same vision and passion for handmade.
We realise the importance of spending quality time with the family; small businesses have started at the kitchen table and become an integral part of our overall lifestyle. We are bringing back the skills of our grandparents, growing vegetables with our children, making do and mending, and returning to an ideology that previous generations have taken for granted. We are realists too and in order to live like this in today’s world, we need to be financially self-sufficient. Online selling venues allow makers and designers to retail their goods with few overheads and as a result, a whole new community of small businesses are working together to promote and support the handmade movement.
UK Handmade is at the heart of this movement. We provide advice and resources to our members, and also collaborate and connect with businesses to further the handmade cause for the benefit of all through our online magazine, website and forum.
