Review of "Making is Connecting"
Good to see a book like this reviewed here, but I don't think that Lisa Payne needs to be concerned that craft is being intellectualised, or that exhibitions like The Power of Making might be "alienating those we should be connecting with". Since early man, there have always been many different strata and reasons behind why 'craft' objects have been made and that includes intellectual objectives as well as homely and useful crafts, right up to artisan crafts that take lifetimes to learn and pass on....those strands will not disappear. I personally think it refreshing to see some strands of the Crafts taken more seriously in our society, something normally reserved for "fine art" just as Grayson Perry has explored. There are also growing desires amongst makers to understand materials and process, with an appreciation of old and new skills and technologies working together, as well as their relevance to todays world. These sorts of enquiries can only help makers understand the world further and therefore how to connect with those that could benefit.Post new comment
