Emily Parkes meets husband and wife design-duo, Tovi Sorga and Corrie de Vries of Tovicorrie. They create beautiful handmade leather accessories for all our favourite gadgets and more! Designing their own intricate patterns for the leather, means they create truly unique designs.
What do you do and how did you start?
We make handmade printed leather accessories for your everyday things. All the designs are original and each item is made by hand to order. All our accessories are made out of 100% fine kid-skin leather and cow hide. We make cases for iphones, itouches, ipods, iPads, kindles, card cases and cuffs. We opened our Etsy shop in January 2009 and a Folksy shop not long after. Corrie, my business partner and wife, encouraged me too; she couldn't believe I had been making these leather accessories for years and only gave them away to friends as gifts! I was working as a Chef, but gave this up after six months as thankfully, I was too busy making orders for Etsy and Folksy. We have never looked back.
Describe your work setting.
We currently work from our flat, with the second bedroom as a dedicated studio. It's full of leather, an old Singer sewing machine, my mac and lots of love, sweat & tears! Corrie, who looks after the customers and marketing, works from our lounge, usually with our son strapped to her sleeping peacefully in a sling.
What are your tools of the trade, which is your favourite?
My Singer sewing machine. I work her really hard everyday but she never gives up on me and I couldn't make our products without her.
How do you maintain balance in your life between work and play?
We have a four and a half month old son, so work and play become blurred often, but we try as much as possible to keep weekends work free and get out the house and do family stuff.
How do you get the word out about your work?
Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
We would love to be both be working full-time on the business, with our own website stocking more high end, one-off pieces, collaborating with artists, in a beautiful house by the beach on the other side of the world.
Who are some of your favourite artists/designers/makers?
Did you always dream of being artists or designer/makers when you were growing up?
My family has always been creative. My mum is forever baking amazing cakes and crocheting hats, booties and toys. My sisters both draw amazingly well - I guess it was in the genes!
