Anna Wilson-Patterson's studio is the front room of her 1930's bungalow on the cliff top at Fairlight Cove, Sussex. The shelves groan with sketchbooks, wood painting panels and artist monographs, whilst draped elegantly on cushions at her feet lie her companions - Finn the lurcher and Oonagh the greyhound.
Walking the hounds at dawn and dusk provides Anna with inspiration. A typical route through the twitten at the top of her road into Hastings Country Park reveals spectacular views across the Channel; ever-changing skies, a glimpse of France, bobbing fishing boats, shrieking seagulls, and large ships journeying over the far horizon. She paints with knives, using water-mixable oil paints on wood, scraping away layers to create texture.
Anna recently published a 50 page paperback book of her paintings called 'By The Sea'. She said "Lots of customers buy my greeting cards, to covet rather than send. It seemed a good idea to publish a collection of my favourite paintings in a bijou book. I'm pleased that customers all over the world have bought it, through my Facebook page and online shop".
This year Anna’s intention is to exhibit in new venues and she was delighted to be approached by The Black Cat Gallery, in the nearby ancient town of Winchelsea. An old butchers shop on the high street has been beautifully converted into a fine art and antiques showroom, with an adjoining space for local artists.
It’s here that Anna's solo show 'By The Sea' opens on Easter Saturday and runs for a month. It includes works featured in her book, such as the fishing boats of The Stade Hastings, Camber Dunes, Prospect Cottage Dungeness and some smaller hound portraits.
